Jane Mushabac has written books, short stories, and essays. Her many awards include fellowships from the NEH and Mellon Foundation and a Leapfrog Press international fiction contest award for her novel, His Hundred Years, A Tale by Shalach Manot. The short play she co-wrote in Ladino premiered at the virtual 2021 New York Ladino Day. The short story she wrote in Ladino, “Pasha: Pensamientos de David Aroughetti” appeared in her English translation in a recent issue of AJS: Perspectives. Her NPR radio play, Mazal Bueno: A Portrait in Song of the Spanish Jews, is available on CD. She’s the co-author of A Short and Remarkable History of New York City (Fordham University Press and Museum of the City of New York), a “Best of the Best” of the American Association of University Presses. Her book on Herman Melville won high praise from Alfred Kazin and Irving Howe and others; and her seminal essay on Moby-Dick appeared in a Modern Language Association volume. Mushabac’s work has been translated into Russian, German, Bulgarian, Turkish, and Ladino. She is professor emerita of English at City University of New York.
